Frustration

Im having a really difficult time trying to finish the layout of my store...I found a layout I was happy with, but then realized that I had forgotten about the columns, and ended up having to change everything. The digital walls idea is a great idea, but Im still struggling with what images to use. It doesnt help at all that Im not a master at photoshop..or that Sketchup keeps choping my walls into tiny little pieces. This time last week, I was really excited about where I was in this project, but today Im actually frustrated beyond belief, and I feel like my ideas are just slipping away while my project crumbles to the ground. Im in serious need of some help.

Sight Waves is a Monster Im struggling to tackle

2nd thought....
what if I change the location of my store? why not choose one that only has ONE set of columns? I think Ill have to try that...

"Where all think alike, no one thinks very much." - Walter Lippmann

Conflict seems to engulf my new and old group members. I feel like no one agrees on anything, except that we need a major group pow-wow. Certain people feel disconnected from the whole, and I can see it clearly. We need an Al Pachino moment, it seems. I cant say that I dont agree with either side. Yes, we need to let the others understand and learn the space before we move on. But, on the other hand, we dont need to dwell on all the details in order to move forward for friday. The issue im personally having is that I dont know what I should be doing. I was put in the physical modeling group, which is great for me, but there's nothing to model..or rather, someone else has been charged with the task, which doesnt make much sense to me. I want to be a strong part of this group, but I need to know which direction to go so I can get something done. Im going to be out of town this weekend, and I have to work a lot, and theres nothing I can do about that..its set in stone. I dont want this project to end without having contributed my best, or have my group look at me like I havent done anything. Im willing to work..just give me something to do!

On another note, we've somehow come to the idea of using fiber-optic fabric...
at first I was ok with it, but now Im not so sure. What do fiber optics have to do with the textile industry? yeah, ok..its fabric. But I feel like we're getting away from what the mill is/was about. Is fiber-optic fabric really a thing of the present? As far as my research has taken me, there hasnt been a huge outcry for this material. It hasnt been picked up as a breakthrough in the textile industry in a while. Not to mention, theres so much fabric use in what we've already designed..if we replace all of the existing with this, it would be extremely bright..and probably in Rainbow Bright kind of way. On another note, theres so much natural light pouring into this building..because thats the way we designed it. Will the fiber optics not lose their appealing qualities? Im just not sold on the idea...

Going Beyond Interiors

There is an installation in the studio lobby that really peaks my interest. Robert Charest's Commercial Design studio was assigned the task of creating a vestment, or garment, out of one kind of paper, and one kind of fastener. When I was first notified of this, I was intrigued, and after seeing the results, Im very pleased.

Although I know that these designs will make it to buildings eventually, Im envious of the students for getting to step away from interiors for a while. I love designing spaces, but it gets overwhelming at times...especially recently. I enjoyed designing individual units in Retail, but to step even further away, even if just for inspiration, would be a nice change. I sometimes wonder if interior design is the right field for me, but I just cant see myself as a fashion designer or strictly graphic designer, either. I almost gave up on my dream after the fall 2007 semester, but I couldnt pull myself apart from it, especially after all the work, time, and money (god knows) Id already spent. Im at a fork in the road of my career where I dont know which way to go, and it scares me a bit...but interiors is what I signed up for, so Ill stick to it until the end, or until they kick me out.
